Legendary natural bodybuilder Reg Park is reported to have never trained to muscular failure as he thought it led to a negative mindset that hindered heavy lifting.
Essentially, the fears of collapsing under a tough load and extreme pain would psych a guy out before the set had even begun.
It’s certainly something I have experienced before pushing a set to the limit and I know it had a detrimental effect on my training, which is why I haven’t done it for probably 8 years at this point.
Then there are the physical effects to consider.
Training to failure does a number on your muscles and can, particularly with “big” exercises like squats, make it very difficult to adequately recover between sessions. (Anecdotally, I ate a lot more when I’ve done a lot of failure training which made me pudgy because I don’t take jooce).
And, of course, there’s the shockingly high risk of injury associated with this type of training.
Bottom line: Training to failure is for dummies.
The alternative?
Check your ego at the door and leave a rep or three “in the tank” at the end of every set.
Your ability to make sustainable progress over the long term will thank you.
It pays to adopt a similar attitude towards your cardio, especially running because of how demanding it can be on ye olde jointes.
Hence why I teach a measured approach in my prestigious report “The Running Starter Kit” which is designed to take you from not running at all to running respectable distances multiple times per week.
It’s yours for the princely price of £6.50 – a sum even a porker who treats their local fast food place like a second home can afford if they could pull themselves away from their bucket of fried chicken for long enough to order it.
Two important points to note before proceeding:
1) I am printing the reports to order on my personal printer using regular printer paper. An attractive document this is not, so please don’t buy it if you’re more concerned with how it looks than what it contains.
2) There are no refunds or guarantees beyond the 14 days on receipt of goods I’m obliged to give to comply with consumer protection legislation.
If that hasn’t put you off, more info and order below:
Thank you,
Phil Tyreman
P.S. Do not purchase “The Running Starter Kit” if you own either “The Conditioning Codex” or March’s issue of “The Phil Tyreman Letter” (where it was given as a bonus) because you’ll be paying for the same information twice.
