In 2016, I was fresh out of the ambulance service (job drove me crazy – severe and enduring mental illness crazy).
The first thing I did was qualify as a personal trainer.
It was something I’d wanted to do for a long time but had never gotten around to until circumstance forced my hand.
Strangely, I didn’t actually want to train clients in person. (PTSD will do that to you).
Instead, my aim was to write and sell books on fitness, and that’s what I told the nice lady at Lloyds Bank in Fareham when I went to open my business bank account.
She then asked, “What’s your business plan?”
To which I answered, “Dunno”.
Regardless, she gave me a bank account despite the fact I obviously had no idea what I was doing – bless her.
To nobody’s great surprise, my first foray into business was a runaway failure.
I soon gave up on the fitness books idea because I didn’t know how to sell them and ended up PTing in a local gym.
I didn’t know how to sell PT, either (I had plenty of clients, but charged so little I made next to no money) so I quit after a few months and got a corporate job to replenish my funds.
Later, I opened a small personal training gym…
… and promptly lost two-thirds of my life savings.
Why?
Loads of clients but no profit because I still didn’t know how to sell.
This is a very common problem among personal trainers, yet few are prepared to do what it takes to solve it.
But Yours Baldly is cut from a different cloth.
I got a job in recruitment to learn sales.
I didn’t like calling people (again, PTSD makes the anxiety associated with calling people who mostly don’t want to talk to you intolerable), so I learned copywriting.
Started a copywriting business that paid the bills (and then some).
And now, I’m finally in a position to do what I’ve always wanted to do.
Which, among other things, includes writing books on fitness like the one that’s on pre-order until Friday 23/02 at midnight GMT. (That’s only a few hours away from now).
The book is called The Conditioning Codex and it’s currently in pre-order with a hefty 50% discount for those who purchase before the midnight deadline.
It’s still very expensive, even with the discount. So only pre-order if you intend to put the material into action, otherwise you’re just wasting your money.

P.S. Today’s story contains an essential lesson every man who is serious about meeting and exceeding his fitness goals must learn.
Here it is:
Getting what you want invariably involves doing a bunch of difficult and, at times, humbling things.
Like mastering the basic barbell lifts to build the baseline strength you need to excel in other areas. (Playing football or rugby, or even something as simple as shifting furniture).
Or pounding the pavements to build the iron heart and lungs of steel you need to keep up with your kids and mitigate your risk of developing serious yet preventable medical conditions.
And sometimes, admitting (perhaps begrudgingly) that you don’t know what you don’t know, which means finding and paying an appropriately qualified expert to fill your knowledge gap.
Anyway, the pre-order window shuts at midnight tonight (Friday 23/02), so if you want to take advantage of that 50% discount, now is the time.
