Are:
1) You’re basically guaranteed to drop a bunch of unsightly body fat (provided you can be bothered to pay a modicum of attention to your diet),
2) Being one of the rare few who can hammer out pullups like nobody’s business is a great feeling,
3) You arms will likely explode in size rather quickly (unless you are an adult human female in which case they’ll simply firm up nicely),
4) You can potentially ditch your gym membership, saving hundreds of pounds per year not to mention the palaver of commuting to and fro for your workouts,
5) Workouts are typically very short, saving you oodles of time thereby making training much more convenient and less stressful when you are busy,
6) Risk of injury is low,
7) It’ll plug yawning gaps in your “general physical preparedness” providing a much needed boost to your toughness (physical and mental) that will serve you well if and when you decide to return to a weights-based routine,
8) Basically zero skill is required to get started due to the low complexity of the basic variations of the core movements,
9) Performing many thousands of repetitions of those aforementioned basic movement patterns will do wonders for your mobility and coordination, greatly increasing the effectiveness of their weighted counterparts,
10) Workouts can (and in most cases, should) be so simple you can just go out and get cracking without worrying about logging every detail,
11) Your entire training regime can consist of just four exercises (plus a little extra work to keep your back and shoulders healthy) if you like,
12) Or you can keep things interesting (without compromising your progress) by adding in variation as and when the mood suits,
13) If you have kids it’s the perfect way to introduce them to training (as showing them what a healthy relationship with exercise looks like is an order of magnitude more effective than merely telling them), and,
14) Likewise if you have a wife, girlfriend, husband, or boyfriend who is out of shape and you would prefer them not to be that way, bodyweight training is the perfect introduction because not only will you be showing rather than telling (see point 13) but the workouts are about as “beginner friendly” as it is possible for them to be.
All right, enough of this.
If I have “sold” you on the idea of spending at least the next ten weeks pursuing a bodyweight training programme, you’d do well to become one of my merry crew of Bodyweight Buccaneers.
But first, take a few minutes to carefully read about what you are letting yourself in for:
