An Open Letter to Every Man Who Started Training to Be More Attractive to Women

If you have ever wondered how to get a body like a Classical Greek sculpture, without so much as looking at a steroid or other illicit substance, this short letter explains how.

Here’s the story:

Believe it or not, the sole reason I started training was because I was

Fat and Lonely!

I reasoned that if I was strong and in shape, I would have a much easier time getting a girlfriend.

You will not be surprised to hear that getting large and shapely muscles was not the golden ticket I thought it was.

But it certainly helped.

Mostly because I was confident for the first time in my life (I was painfully shy as a teenager because of the way I looked).

That said, my journey from fat to fit was…

... far more treacherous than it needed to be

You see, I was fortunate in that I was taught how to train the “old school” way by the gent who owned what was one of the oldest gyms in Great Britain before it shut (the Don Styler Physical Training Centre in Gosport). The eponymous Don dogmatically explained to me the right way to build a powerful physique without abusing steroids or other dangerous drugs.

I followed his advice, and made stellar progress in my first year.

And then I discovered “The Fitness Internet”, got suckered in by dramatic “before and after” photographs, and tricked into thinking a great body was just 12 weeks away.

It was not 12 weeks away.

12 years more like.

Anyway, I went very off piste with my training, trying all sorts of bone-splintering training programmes and certifiably insane diets (one of which nearly left me blind in one eye).

Frustration, failure, and injuries that plague me to this day followed.

If only I had stuck to what I knew worked, I suspect I would be much further along than I am now.

But what’s done is done. And there’s no use crying about it when I could use my accumulated knowledge and experience to put together a muscle-building programme that’s shamelessly focused on maximising aesthetic appeal (but not at the expense of health or performance).

Obviously, that’s what I did.

It worked

So well, in fact, my lovely wife says I have never looked so good (I won’t patronise you by explaining how that has improved our relationship considerably).

Better:

I’ve pretty much forgotten what it feels like to dodge the mirror whenever I have my shirt off, let alone be ashamed when I go swimming with my kiddos.

All right, enough tugging at your heart strings.

Here’s the deal:

I have collated the muscle building programme I have just been talking about into a Real Paper book.

The book is very expensive, costing £750.

It’s called:

The Greek Physique

And…

Here are five good reasons NOT to buy it:

  1. You have not been training at least somewhat consistently for the last three months (total beginners or fresh returners are supremely unlikely to stick with it to the end for various reasons),
  2. You are unwell or have one or more injuries that interfere with your ability to perform basic barbell compound movements (such as the squat, bench press, deadlift, overhead press and their close variations as these are an integral part of how the programme delivers results),
  3. You struggle to follow instructions as given (I have been told that my style is “dogmatic” – some like this way but if you don’t the result is invariably stress and strife we could both do without),
  4. You cannot commit to following my approach for the next six months (important, considering that this is the absolute minimum you’ll need to give it to see meaningful results), and,
  5. Spending £750 would put you in financial distress of any kind (I categorically do not want anyone to get into debt to buy my products under any circumstances).

If none of the above apply,

Here’s how it works

This is a muscle building programme.

All of the methods I will teach you have stood the test of time (for knocking on the door of a century, in some cases)… and… are what I have personally used at various points during my fifteen or so years of training.

Obviously, the goal is to get you building muscle. But not haphazardly or in a way that causes you to accumulate a bunch of unsightly body fat.

Instead, you will follow a structured approach to enhance your strengths and shore up your weaknesses to create a balanced, healthy physique.

What is “a balanced, healthy physique”?

  • Broad shoulders and a narrow waist to create an attractive V-taper,
  • Powerful legs featuring well-developed thighs, hamstrings, and glutes,
  • Strong arms to fill out your shirt sleeves,
  • The “little muscles” like calves and forearms in proper proportion (more important than you think),
  • Lean yet slightly “soft” abdominals that can be maintained without following a soul-sucking diet.

It goes without saying that I can’t guarantee you’ll get what I have just described, even if you follow my instructions perfectly.

Please note: Any results you do get will come slowly (we are talking months at the minimum, not weeks) and your “dream body” is almost certainly a good number of years away. If you’re not ready to accept that, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.

Alright, if you’re still with me, you probably want to know what’s inside, so hark unto:

What you will learn

  • Why the men and women of the pre-steroid era look objectively better than the drugged up, mutated Ninja-turtles and obeasts we call “strength athletes” today. Page 12.
  • What a philosopher who lived over 2200 years ago says about the importance of physical training and how it is an essential component of the “flourishing life” every serious person ought to aspire to (parents or pretty much anyone who holds a position of authority over others needs to pay very close attention to this if they don’t want to be a hypocrite). Pages 13 and 14.
  • Words of encouragement to the ladies who are bold and brave enough to follow my methods (if you’re a man you need listen up too, if you want your wife or girlfriend to live a long, happy, and healthy life). Page 15.
  • The best type of gym to train in, if you want to be surrounded by people who are stronger and in better shape than you. (Hint: You do if you want to make more than middling progress). Page 21.
  • Exactly what makes otherwise healthy and uninjured people unable to safely execute core barbell movements like squats and bench presses. Page 22.
Let’s dig into that last bullet point a little bit.  In years gone by, it was pretty common to see beginners rocket up in size and strength so fast…

… you’d be convinced they were on steroids!

Nowadays, not so much.

I know why this is, and it’s due to a lack of the exact characteristic Phase One (of four) shows you how to develop on Pages 47-71.

Better:

Getting results here requires no special skill or talent beyond an ability to knuckle down and work hard.Oh, and I’d be surprised training this way didn’t make you leaner, too (provided you pay some attention to what you’re eating).

Anyway, we continue:

  • What I have decided is the hands-down best training protocol to build toughness (this isn’t something you can track or measure via an app or spreadsheet, but it will enhance your life in manifold and wonderful ways). Pages 25-27.
  • The most efficient and effective way to build a heart of iron and lungs of steel, and bones of iridium (you’re probably not going to like it, I know I certainly don’t, but you will struggle to find better in this regard). Pages 27-30.
  • How to use bodyweight movements to boost your performance in the weightroom. (Pages 31-38).
  • The harsh truth about why some struggle with bodyweight training. (It’s one of three problems mentioned on Page 36 and, if any apply, you must solve it post-haste if you are interested in training in ten years’ time or potentially surviving long enough to reach state pension age).
  • “The Breath, Blood, and Bone Building Plan” to bring your heart, lungs, and general resilience up to par (mandatory for making meaningful progress on more conventional muscle-building regimes) Pages 38-45.
  • Simple guidelines to help you know when it’s time to take your training up a gear (applies generally, not only to the material in this book). Pages 45-46.

Would you believe…

… that’s just the first phase!

There are two more plus one optional extra for those who are mentally and physically ready for a big challenge.

Each focuses on developing specific characteristics, all of which are needed to not only build but maintain an aesthetically pleasing body.

What’s more, considering the sheer volume of material you’re getting in “The Greek Physique”, I’m convinced there’s enough here to keep you occupied and, provided you put the work in and do as you’re told, making progress for many, many months to come.

Speaking of those other phases, next up is Phase Two in which you will learn:

  • How getting hung up on minutiae is perhaps the fastest way to wind up going nowhere at all. (Page 47)
  • How to build strength in a way that won’t result in you developing the “fat T-rex” look that is the inevitable product of most strength training routines (the key lies in the exercise selection, specifically, what exercises NOT to do and they are named and shamed on pages 52-56).
  • Why following conventional strength training advice will likely cause a lot of problems if you are overweight or obese (and what you should do instead). Page 50.
  • My evidence-based take on the BMI that causes fat lifters who identify as muscluar to get so enraged, they’re at risk of having a stroke (truly, page 51 should come with a health warning, so triggering is the material to some).
  • “The Strength Training Programme for the Man (and Possibly Woman) who cares about their appearance”, to get you strong enough to lift the weights you need to lift to build muscle. Pages 52-69.
  • The best number of cardio and lifting sessions to do per week when trying to get stronger Page 62 and Page 67.
  • One piece of advice everyone is told to follow that could actually slow your progress… or even halt it altogether via a crippling injury (just one of many “sacred cows” I gleefully slaughter in the book). Page 66.
  • When and how often to take deload and rest weeks (vital for ensuring steady, sustainable progress). Page 68

That’s Phase Two in a nutshell, but we’re not done yet because I’m giving you…

... more!

In Phase Three which teaches you:

  • The best training variable to optimise for when trying to build muscle (also shortens your workouts considerably and, done right, reduces the risk of injury greatly). Page 71.
  • The common psychological hangup that caused me to disregard the sage advice of the man who was bold enough to call the great Arnold Schwarzenegger a “fat f**k” to his face. (I’m not kidding when I say this is common. Moreover, it’s supremely damaging because it causes you  to reject what is self-evidently true). Pages 72-74.
  • How becoming a father for the third time inspired me to slice the duration of my workouts… while making them MORE effective (and exactly how I did it). Page 75.
  • How long your muscle-building workouts should last for best results (here’s a clue – it’s less than one hour, inclusive of warmup and cooldown. A span of time anyone who is serious about getting a great body can spare, I am sure). Page 77.
  • Three life-enhancing benefits not directly related to training you will get from trimming the fat from your workouts. Page 78.
  • How to avoid getting the blotchy, pockmarked skin, stooped posture, and freakish Frankenstein’s creature-esque muscles that are mistakenly seen as a mark of “discipline” by fans of bodybuilding (when they’re actually indicative of mental disturbances such as eating disorders and deliberate self harm) in favour of a physique that is healthy, natural, and real. Pages 79-80.
  • “Lead Lined Muscles” my comprehensive approach for building handsome muscles in a balanced fashion for a body that looks every bit as good as it performs. Pages 80-92
  • A brutally honest way to determine what bit of your body needs the most work (easily the most “unfun” recommendation in the book, but if you’ve the stomach for it you’ll progress much faster in the aesthetics department. (Page 81).
  • How to bring lagging muscle groups up to par using my “caveman simple” Push and Pump system. (Page 82).
  • How to keep your training interesting without compromising on your ability to make progress. (Too much variety or variety in the wrong places will torpedo your efforts before you even begin, but there are places in your programme where the details really don’t matter, and it’s here you can spice things up to keep yourself mentally engaged). Also on Page 82)
  • How not to “blow your load” on your warmup sets (this is something I see people getting wrong all the time, and it’s a crying shame because exhausting your muscles before your working sets is a surefire way for your efforts to result in nothing more than frustration and failure). Page 90.
  • My foolproof way of building workouts that makes it basically impossible to miss any body part out. (Page 84).
  • A method adapted from the legendary Iron Guru, Vince Gironda, you can use to dramatically boost the effectiveness of your workouts without lifting heavier weights, cramming in more sets, or grinding out more reps. (Of all the things I wish I knew when I first started training, this is easily at the top of the list). Page 89
  • How to do cardio in a way that doesn’t interfere with your muscle or strength building efforts (important if the idea of falling into an early grave scares you). Page 91.
  • One dangerous nonsense, implicitly and sometimes explicitly peddled by big names in the fitness industry, that I used to believe with utter conviction and is responsible for a laundry list of chronic injuries that would have terminated my ability to train…

... Forever

Had I not suffered them in my early 20s. Truly, what  I disclose on Page 93 is mandatory reading for anyone who is interested in still being able to train, let alone make progress ten years from now.

Anyway, that’s the third Phase.

That just leaves the final Phase, which I must stress is completely optional. Honestly, most people probably shouldn’t even try it!

Why include it, then?

Simply because when you are ready for it physically and mentally, it’s a brutally effective way to put the “finishing touches” to your physique by dropping body fat while preserving as much of your hard-won muscle as possible.

Behold the “forbidden” teachings of Phase Four…

  • How a much derided method of training is actually the fastest way to make a big difference to your physique, provided you set it up correctly (that caveat is key as so many get it so very wrong which has resulted in this stellar mode of training having such a terrible reputation). Page 95.
  • The best variable to manipulate to make progress on a muscle  building programme (hint: it’s not lifting more weight). Page 98.
  • How to know you are truly ready for advanced training regimes. Page 95
  • What I believe is the most logical and productive way to structure your training to maximise your aesthetic appeal (more often than not, one muscle group in particular is not given the attention it deserves to the great detriment of the one following the programme). Page 96.
  • Exactly how long I think you should persist with a demanding training programme (what you absolutely must not do is keep hammering away until you give up the ghost, unless you like having so little energy getting out of bed is a challenge andfinding something as simple as getting dressed causes your joints to cry out in agony). Page 99.
  • When it’s OK to switch things up (and precisely how to do it without torpedoing any progress you’ve hitherto made). Page 100.

That’s a complete, chronological summary of the main body of the book. But I’d be selling you  short if I left it at that which is why the book is chock full of:

Bonus Material

Including:

  • THREE issues of my venerable, Real Paper Newsletter The Phil Tyreman Letter that have previously only been available as part of a £120/month subscription,
  • An article titled “On the Proper Use of Weightlifting Machines” that I gave as a bonus to my Phil Tyreman Letter subscribers… and…
  • A transcript of an audio training to help you make better decisions around training and eating that was part of a private personal training programme I took off  sale a long time ago.

And that, my friend, is everything.

This is easily my most comprehensive work on the subject of building an enviable physique that will provoke profound feelings of jealousy among people many years your junior.

Do as you are told for long enough and I wouldn’t be surprised if people start accusing you of taking all sorts of illegal and dangerous performance enhancing drugs (a nice feeling, speaking from experience).

OK, if you’re still with me and are interested in having a copy to call your own, here is:

Author

P.S. Despite the headline, both men and women will benefit from the book, as there is no meaningful difference between how the two sexes ought to train.

What differs is the way the results manifest.

For example, women will always gain less muscle in their upper body due to the way it is distributed (meaning it’s basically impossible for a woman to get “bulky” unless they abuse illegal drugs).

Bottom Line: If a healthy, balanced, attractive physique is what you want, The Greek Physique will show you how to get it, irrespective of your chromosomes.
